The Lake District & Whitehaven

Our drive to Buttermere, despite tiny roads, was stunning and lovely.
Turns out the Fred Whitton Challenge Bike Race was going on.
Some of the roads were too small to comfortably pass the bikers, but we pushed on still.
Listed as a 25% grade.
Buttermere, the town.
Trail around Buttermere Lake
Waterfalls in these parts are called "forces"
I can't get enough of the stinking cute lambs!!!
Castlerigg Stone Circle. Similar time period to Stonehenge, just further north.
Whitehaven. I was looking for a beach to walk on. We ended up wandering around the marina instead.
Turns out, Whitehaven was "raided" by John Paul Jones.
Whitehaven's harbor guarded by 2 lighthouses. The building in the foreground is part of an old coal mine.
There were close to 100 coal mines between Whitehaven and Workington. They dotted the coastline. We saw at least 2 just in Whitehaven - the Duke Pit and the Wellington Pit.
Known as the Candlestick. It is an old vent for the coal mine.
The distant coastline is Scotland.
It's hazy, but that far, difficult-to-see land is Isle of Man.
Her Majesty's Coast Guard vessel. Isn't it lovely?
I think I found Peter Rabbit!
The deep marina was surrounded by these ladders from the top to the water below.
