My friend, Jenna and I went to the Winterreise Project (ask Jenna for correct German pronunciation). It was sung by Opera Idaho's Jason Detwiler and danced to by 3 local dancers from different companies (Jason Hartley, Sayoko Knodes, and Libby Schmoeger). They were all accompanied by Steven Crawford on the piano. It was done at The Egyptian Theater. It was a beautiful poem song about a man who's heart has been broken and is walking/wandering on a winter night (that's his walking stick below). Acting out his emotions (or so it seemed) were the contemporary dancers. The screen behind them all had black and white, antique-looking film of wintery scenes and one of a male and female dancer. It was strange, beautiful, contrasting, and emotional all at once. I don't know if it was my favorite thing ever, but I love Mr Dewiler's voice. Not all of the dancing seemed to be in sync with the emotion of the music, so that was confusing. Overall, I'm glad I went.
